Speaking up on climate change for a better future

Young PCS member Saul explains why he's speaking at the climate justice rally in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne this weekend (9 December).

This Saturday 9 December I’ll be speaking at the Newcastle rally on the international day of action for climate justice, one of many events across the world organised by the Climate Justice Coalition.

These rallies take place at a time when world leaders are meeting in Dubai for COP28. It’s becoming increasingly clear that international commitments made by world leaders to stop potentially catastrophic temperature rises are under threat. Extreme climate conditions hit new records across the world this year, with summer 2023 being the hottest on record. Reports of extreme weather, intense heat, wildfires and crop failure are becoming normalised in a way that is frightening.

It’s crucial for my generation and future generations that we remain focused on the climate issue. We need to find solutions to reverse climate change including a “Just Transition” for workers from carbon -rich industries.

The solutions are there, we just need the political and economic will to implement them. That’s why we need to keep up the pressure and support Saturday’s events.

I encourage all PCS colleagues to attend rallies where they can, but also to get involved in the climate justice campaign more widely, so these are not just annual events.

To find a rally near you, please visit the Climate Justice Coalition’s website and check social media. Bring PCS flags and banners, tell colleagues, friends and family. Share your photos and videos on social media using the hashtag #NowWeRise.
