Belfast Anti-Racism Rally: Tuesday 26 September

An anti-racism rally to protest a number of recent attacks in the city is to be supported by trade unions and community groups.

Belfast United Against Racism are organising the rally, which will take place at 6:30pm in Shaftesbury Square, in response to an increase in racially motivated attacks. These attacks have included arson at a business premises, damage to community facilities and have seen families intimidated from their homes.

They follow an incident in Dunmurry last month where fascist flags were erected outside a mosque. That incident rightfully received a strong response from the community who held a protest in the village in support of the mosque, and was well supported by unions, community groups and political parties.

A Belfast United Against Racism spokesperson said: “These attacks are carried out by a minority of racist thugs, who target migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers in the dead of night. We are gathering to show solidarity with those affected and to stand against those who want to divide us.

“We are working with community groups, trade unions, anti-racism activists, human rights organisations, and everyone who stands against this poison to rally against racism.”

PCS has a strong and proud history of standing against fascism in all its guises, and in speaking up for the rights of Black and migrant workers and citizens. PCS reps and members are encouraged to show solidarity with Belfast United Against Racism and the local migrant community by attending Tuesday’s rally.
