Chair of PCS Parliamentary group raises civil service pay at committee hearing

Chris Stephens MP highlighted endemic low pay in large government departments on the day our national ballot launched.

Chair of the PCS parliamentary group, Chris Stephens MP, has raised low pay in the civil service at a Delegated Legislation Committee hearing on the draft National Minimum Wage (Amendment) (No. 2) Regulations 2024 which took place yesterday (18).

In his contribution Mr Stephens drew attention to the thousands of workers in both the DWP and HMRC who are currently paid the national minimum wage, relying on food banks and 'the benefits they are administering' in order to survive. He went on to ask ministers to submit exact figures detailing how many UK government employees were earning the national minimum wage.

PCS general secretary Fran Heathcote will meet with members of the PCS parliamentary group today (19) to update them on the national campaign and will ask for their continued support in putting pressure on ministers in advance of the pay remit guidance publication.

As part of our national campaign we are demanding a cost of living rise plus restoration alongside our demands for pensions justice and job security.

PCS members are asked to vote YES in our ballot. Find out more information about the ballot and read our FAQs.
