Environmental groups to challenge government in court

PCS is urging members to support a demo in London on Tuesday (20) outside the Royal Court of Justice as campaign groups take the government to court over environmental failures.

Friends of the Earth, Client Earth and the Good Law Project are taking the government to court again over their revised Net Zero Strategy. PCS members are urged to attend a demo in support of the action where possible. This will be on the first day of the hearing, at 9am on Tuesday (20), outside the Royal Courts of Justice in London (WC2A 2LL).

The Climate Change Act 2008 requires governments to show how they will meet legally binding carbon reduction targets. The current government was in court in 2022 over its Net Zero Strategy which, the judge ruled, failed to outline how its policies would be effective.

Last year, this government published its Carbon Delivery Budget Plan. Again, Friends of the Earth believe that the plans fail to provide the actual detail and the policies outlined have a high chance of failing anyway.

Climate change is a core trade union issue. As climate change impacts the UK and around the world, sometimes with catastrophic consequences, there needs to be solidarity with those affected. There also needs to be a robust and carefully planned move to protect workers and create employment as we move to a decarbonised economy.

This is a good opportunity for PCS members to demonstrate a united concern about the government's weak climate plan. Please support the demo on Tuesday 20 February, if possible, with PCS banners and in-person solidarity. If you are able to attend, please can you let us know by contacting policy officer Sam Mason sam@pcs.org.uk.
