General Secretary and Assistant General Secretary elections

The process to elect our next general secretary and assistant general secretary gets underway today (4). Branches are invited to make nominations for candidates.

Following Mark Serwotka's announcement that he will retire as PCS general secretary, there will be elections for our next general secretary and also assistant general secretary. Mark has served in the role since 2000.

The election process, determined by the national executive committee, says that for a candidate to run in the elections they must have been nominated by at least 15 PCS branches. This applies to both the general secretary (GS) and assistant general secretary (AGS) elections.

Nominations can be made by branches, called by their respective branch executive committee (BEC), in line with the union’s rules. Branches may call an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) to make a nomination. Branches should give at least 14 days' notice of meetings.

The general secretary is the most senior elected full time official in PCS, and is elected every five years. The elected general secretary's work includes meeting with the Cabinet Office and government, and leading on negotiations on pay, pensions, and terms and conditions, as well as being the public voice of PCS with the media.
