Join us in London on 18 December to call for Safe Passage

End the year with a celebration of unity over division at a demonstration outside the Home Office in London.

Taking place symbolically on the UN’s International Day of Migrants (18 December), PCS is joining a large number of other trade unions, charities and campaign groups at a demonstration against the government’s poisonous anti-refugee agenda.

The demonstration will start outside the Home Office in London, at 2 Marsham Street, London, SW1P 4DF. There will be several speakers – including a representative from PCS – followed by live music and a social event in central London.

As the government ramps up its attacks on refugees and migrants, it is important that we celebrate migration, show support for refugees who are under attack, and call on the government to abandon any plans to send asylums seekers to Rwanda policy and to adopt our proposed policy of Safe Passage, which is the sole workable solution to dangerous channel crossings and the only way to prevent tragic deaths in the channel.

Safe Passage would not only allow refugees to have their asylum claims properly and safely considered – it would allow our members to do their jobs without political interference so they can provide the fair and empathetic asylum system that they aspire towards.

Far from over

In November, after over a year of campaigning against the Rwanda policy, PCS welcomed a Supreme Court decision which upheld the Court of Appeal’s ruling that the UK government's plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda is unlawful.

But we warned at the time that that our campaigning against this government’s dangerous anti-refugee agenda was far from over.

As PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka put it this week:

“The sacking of Suella Braverman and appointment of James Cleverly as Home Secretary has not signalled a change of policy or direction from government in relation to refugees and asylum seekers.

“On International Migrants' Day, it’s vital that progressive forces join the demonstration to oppose this government’s policies and support our Safe Passage plan that would provide a humane alternative to the government’s Rwanda policy.”
