Kings Speech 2023 - What can we expect?

The State Opening of Parliament will set out the legislative year before the next General Election

Today (7) the King will deliver a speech to mark the State Opening of Parliament. His speech will set out the final legislative plans of the government before the next general election. The speech, which is expected to be fairly 'light' in terms of legislative announcements, will likely have four main pieces of legislation - crime and justice, energy regulation, leasehold rules and offensive weapons.

Rumours are circulating that secondary legislation related to the Government's Minimum Service Levels Act may be announced which could have implications for PCS members working in the Home Office, specifically staff at borders across the UK.

The government knows that this is its last change to bring about legislative change before the next election, therefore it may introduce non controversial Bills which will secure cross party approval to ensure quick passage through parliament.
