PCS A to Z: S for Sustainable workplaces

PCS is part of a growing movement demanding economic, social, and environmental justice to create a unionised, zero-carbon economy.

In June 2019 our national executive committee declared a climate emergency on behalf of our members. And in May 2023 we published our PCS workers for climate justice report which highlights some of the things we are doing, including our work around developing the vision of a National Climate Service.

Workplaces are a major contributor to carbon emissions, so all workers have a vitally important role to play together in improving their sustainability, in a range of different ways, large and small.

Green reps play an important role in raising awareness, and promoting workplace practices to reduce waste, improve energy efficiency, as well as travel, and green procurement policies. They undertake workplace environmental audits, liaise with the branch on green/sustainability issues that need to be raised with management, and take forward PCS policy and campaigns on sustainability and climate change.
