Support the museum strikes

PCS members at National Museums Liverpool start their strike action on Saturday 17 February.

Over 200 PCS members working at seven museums and galleries across Merseyside will walk out from 17 February to 14 April. Their employer, National Museums Liverpool (NML) has refused to pay a £1500 cost-of-living payment, one of the concessions made by the government as a result of our national campaign.

The action will affect the Museum of Liverpool, the World Museum, the International Slavery Museum and the Maritime Museum, as well as the Walker Art Gallery, Sudley House and the Lady Lever Art Gallery.

The first picket line to mark the start of the strike will be held outside the World Museum Liverpool, on William Brown Street in Liverpool city centre, from 8:30-11am on Saturday 17 February. The museum’s management has already announced to the public that World Museum will be closed because of the strike action.

Impact of the strike

NML’s main website has a page giving details of all the site closures caused by the strike during the first week of action.

On most days all seven venues will be closed to the public.

A statement from Museum Director Laura Pye says: “We are sorry that from Saturday 17 February we’ll be closing several of our museums and galleries, for an extended period due to strike action… we want to be in open discussion with our striking colleagues to find a solution, so that we can welcome them back and reopen all our sites as soon as we can.”
