PCS responds to Reform UK threats against civil servants

Comments coming from Reform UK figures is yet again, another attempt to intimidate civil servants and trade union members for exercising their democratic rights.

PCS rejects entirely the suggestion that defending jobs, pay, pensions and workplace rights somehow breach Civil Service impartiality. Trade union membership and lawful industrial organisation are protected rights. Preparing to defend members against threatened cuts, redundancies and attacks on terms and conditions is precisely what a responsible trade union is required to do.

The motion being debated at PCS conference does not call for unlawful action. It reflects the reality that Reform UK figures have repeatedly and publicly threatened mass cuts to Civil Service jobs, attacks on pensions, the dismantling of vital public services and restrictions on trade union rights. When politicians openly describe civil servants as a ‘bloated bureaucracy’ and threaten sackings, unions have a duty to prepare and protect their members.

PCS members deliver vital services to the public day in and day out, with professionalism and integrity, regardless of which party is in power. So, they will not sit back when any politician threatens their jobs, pay, pensions or those vital services they provide. They deserve respect, not threats that are designed to undermine them and create fear.

PCS will continue to act within the law, defend the impartial Civil Service and oppose any attempt by any government to de-unionise the workforce or undermine the rights, protections and collective voice of working people.
