Motions
Annual general meetings (AGMs) enable PCS members to influence union policy and address the issues that matter most. Among the key activities during this time is the submission and discussion of motions. But what is a motion, and why is it so important?
A motion is essentially an instruction from members to their branch, group, or the union’s national executive committee (NEC). It specifies the policies or actions that you, as a member, want PCS to prioritise. For example, if you are concerned about adapting to hybrid working models while protecting job security, you could submit a motion requesting the NEC to address these concerns. If your motion is passed at our annual delegate conference (ADC), the incoming NEC will be required to take action on it.
Motions are not limited to workplace-specific issues. They can also address broader topics that are important to you and your colleagues, such as environmental sustainability, equal pay, or international solidarity. Once agreed upon at your branch AGM, your branch will be obligated to act on the motion or take it forward to the group or ADC for consideration.
Writing and submitting a motion may seem daunting, but help is available. Your local reps can guide you through the process, ensuring your motion is in the proper format to maximise its chances of success. PCS also offers resources through PCS Digital and the PCS Academy to help members learn more about motion writing and AGM participation.
The AGM is open to all members and serves as a vital platform for shaping the future of the union. Beyond submitting motions, it’s an opportunity to meet with your branch executive committee, discuss priorities for the coming year, and influence the direction of PCS. Inclusive and democratic by nature, AGMs encourage participation from members of all backgrounds, ensuring that diverse perspectives inform union policy.
All AGMs must be completed by 6 March 2025, so don’t miss your chance to get involved. Check your email or branch noticeboards for AGM details, or contact your branch secretary if you need more information. With the right support and resources, your voice can make a meaningful impact in shaping PCS policy and addressing the issues that matter most to you.
