PCS urges employers to consult unions on implementation of EHRC Code of Practice
PCS recognises that the publication of the EHRC Code of Practice raises important questions and concerns for members across the civil service and wider public sector.
Our priority is to ensure that all members continue to be treated with dignity, respect and fairness at work, and that any changes arising from the guidance are implemented lawfully, proportionately and in consultation with the union.
PCS is committed to maintaining workplaces that are safe, inclusive and free from harassment, bullying and discrimination. We will continue to represent and support all members who may be affected by changes to workplace policies or facilities.
PCS conference recently reaffirmed the union's commitment to maintaining workplaces that are inclusive and safe spaces where LGBT+ members feel comfortable attending work and are free from harassment. Conference also made clear that equality, diversity and inclusion policies should continue to be upheld and strengthened, and that employers should consult with recognised trade unions before making any changes to workplace policies or facilities.
Employers across the civil service will now be considering the implications of the Code of Practice for their services, and PCS expects employers to approach any review of policies or facilities carefully, lawfully and with meaningful engagement with the union and affected staff.
PCS general secretary Fran Heathcote said:
"Many of our members will be reading today's guidance with uncertainty and concern about what it could mean for them in their workplaces. At a time when many LGBT+ people feel under increasing scrutiny, it is vital that employers act carefully, and responsibly - PCS will hold employers to that responsibility.
"Every worker deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, and employers must ensure that any implementation of this guidance protects the rights and wellbeing of all staff.
"PCS has always stood for equality, fairness and solidarity. We will continue to support members affected by these changes, challenge discrimination wherever it occurs, and work to ensure workplaces remain safe, inclusive and welcoming for everyone."
