Joining PCS as an apprentice helped me feel supported
For National Apprenticeship Week, PCS young member Meg says when she started out as a modern apprentice in the civil service being a union member helped her feel supported
My name is Meg, I am 25 years old and from Dundee, Scotland. I joined the civil service as a modern apprentice in 2019, when my department was quite new. It was my first full-time job and I was unsure what the apprenticeship would look like. I found the apprenticeship programme really beneficial as it gave me the opportunity to learn on the job whilst gaining a qualification. I was fortunate enough to work alongside other apprentices, with whom I could share knowledge and support for one another as we navigated our new roles and learning modules.
During my first week on the job, I was introduced to PCS by the workplace reps. I didn’t know much about unions at first but I was drawn to the sense of community and benefits associated with it. I quickly joined the union after hearing about the opportunities available, particularly for young members.
The union allowed me to enter the world of work with the feeling of being supported. I later got more involved with PCS when I went to the young members’ seminar where I met other likeminded young people. I took a lot away from that experience and I believe that my skills taken from my apprenticeship and the role of the union allowed me to get the most out of it.
I have since become more involved by becoming a part of the national young members’ committee where I am the young member convener for Scotland. I have since taken part in many learning opportunities including the youth officer course. I would not have had these opportunities if it hadn’t been for the union providing that support and assurance during my apprenticeship.
