The time to get active in your union is now!
For TUC Young Workers' Month, Molly writes about her experiences at the PCS young members’ seminar and how it has motivated her to get more involved with PCS in her workplace and region.
I have been a PCS member since July this year, I joined the same week I joined the civil service.
I was a member of Unite previously when I worked in retail, but there wasn’t an active union in my old workplaces. It’s great that I can get involved now in PCS as a young member.
This year I attended the annual PCS young members’ seminar in October, in Birmingham, as a first time delegate.
I was unsure of what to expect but keen to learn and get more involved in PCS.
I met other young members from all over the UK. We went through workshops such as how to organise in the workplace and listened to guest speakers discuss important issues such as media literacy. The seminar ran over two days and gave a lot of insight into how you can make a difference in the union both in work and outside of work. What I particularly enjoyed was networking with other PCS members from different departments of government.
I returned to my region eager to engage fellow young members and spread the word about PCS.
To celebrate TUC young workers’ month I joined other members of my branch to run a young members stall, where both members and non-members could pop along for a chat, join PCS, find out more about what the young members are working on and the importance of trade union membership.
As a PCS young member I am acutely aware of how the cost-of-living crisis, and poor pay terms and conditions, are affecting young workers month in, month out. The time to get active in your union is now, PCS is campaigning on your behalf to improve your working conditions and pay, if you're not already a member join today - together we are stronger!
