Why ARMs members need the Political Fund

The chair of the PCS associate and retired members' association (ARMs) sets out why members should vote to retain our political fund.

From 6 October, all members, including associate and retired members (ARMs), will have an opportunity to vote to retain the union's political fund. The fund, which is paid into by all of us from our subscriptions (10p per month from ordinary member subs), is vital for the work of our union, particularly associate and retired members.

Firstly I should stress that this fund is not used to affiliate to any political party. It also does not mean an increase in our subscriptions.

How the political fund supports campaigns

Associate and retired members cannot take industrial action in a PCS dispute. Simply, we cannot withdraw our labour. As such we must campaign for our demands. These demands include all matters linked to pensions, both state and contractual. We are able to campaign with our colleagues in other unions on matters such as the Winter Fuel Allowance and WASPI. This fund is used for wider issues such as health and social care, the environment, peace and against racism.

We also have parliamentary groups in our nation parliaments, a vital point of access for us. Work there is funded from member contributions to the political fund.

This vote is important so please vote and vote yes to enable the union to campaign on your behalf.
