Why PCS’s International work matters
As vice president and chair of our international committee, I want to share something I care deeply about: why PCS’s international work is essential to who we are as a union, and why it connects directly to the issues our members face every day.
Most members encounter PCS at moments of pressure, whether that is when something at work goes wrong, when they need representation, or during negotiations over pay and conditions. Those moments matter, and PCS is at its strongest when we are supporting our members directly. What makes that strength possible is bigger than any single grievance or campaign. Our international work is part of the foundation that makes our union principled, credible and respected.
The human reality behind international crises
It is easy to treat conflicts, repression or humanitarian crises around the world as distant news stories. They are not. They are about workers just like us, people trying to earn a living, support their families and hold on to their basic rights in the face of war, dictatorship, displacement and poverty.
When PCS stands in solidarity with them, we are not indulging in abstract politics. We are defending the same values that underpin our work here at home: dignity, justice, peace and democracy. These are the principles we rely on when we challenge unsafe workplaces, discriminatory policies or attacks on pay and conditions. Supporting workers internationally reinforces those values in our own workplaces.
How global events shape our working lives
International solidarity also helps us understand the world our members work in. Global crises are not isolated from everyday life in the UK. War influences migration. Sanctions shape economic conditions. Authoritarianism destabilises borders. Financial shocks and political crises anywhere can influence the public services we deliver, the resources available to departments, the pressures placed on staff and the cost of living for us all.
Understanding the global picture helps us make sense of these pressures and strengthens our collective voice when we respond to them.
A union that stands for more than itself
One aspect of PCS that I am most proud of is that we are not a union that thinks only about our own interests. Our international work shows that when we say we support our members, we mean all workers. It sends a clear message about the kind of union we are: outward looking, principled and committed to justice in every form.
That matters. It strengthens our reputation when we negotiate. It deepens trust when we organise. It reinforces our shared conviction that the labour movement is global and that our struggles are interconnected.
We are part of the same fight
This newsletter offers a glimpse into what we do internationally, sharing stories of courage, resistance and solidarity from across the world. More importantly, it is a reminder that our struggles are shared. When workers anywhere stand up for their rights, it strengthens workers everywhere.
PCS is, and must always remain, an outward looking union. By supporting others, we become better equipped to protect, empower and represent our members here at home.
