Civil Service Pension Scheme to miss 2015 remedy deadline

Along with other public service schemes Civil Service Pensions will not meet the 31 March deadline indicated in the Public Service Pensions and Judicial Offices Act to complete the 2015 remedy.

People affected by this are retired members who started to receive their pension between 1 March 2015 and 1 October 2023 and are within the scope of the 2015 remedy. The commitment to provide the required information to active scheme members who apply to retire remains unaffected but only around half of the retired members will receive an 'Immediate choice remedy service pack' in the coming weeks. The pack contains the information to enable them to make their choice. The choices will be between either:

  • Legacy benefits to 31 March 2022 and Alpha benefits from 1 April 2022 (only applicable for members with service after the latter date)
  • Alpha benefits from 1April 2015 to the final day of service.

For members who receive their pack by August 2025, and return their option form, the implementation of choices will take place between July and November this year. Choices may change the pension in payment and include the payment of arrears if applicable.

PCS has been informed by the Cabinet Office that a large number of the affected retired scheme members will not receive their packs within this period due to factors which make the calculations more complex. The provision of packs will therefore continue to be issued over a period of up to two years. PCS has made clear that this is disappointing news for many civil service pensioners and that we will be carefully monitoring the progress of the 2015 remedy.
