Guidance for a safe and united demonstration on 16 May
PCS urges members to plan ahead, stay safe and stand together in solidarity at the Nakba 78 demonstration.
As PCS members prepare to attend the national demonstration marking Nakba 78 on Saturday 16 May, the union is encouraging everyone to make final preparations to ensure a safe, organised and collective presence.
This year’s commemoration in central London is a powerful moment of solidarity with the Palestinian people and all those affected by displacement, occupation and injustice. It also comes amid increased far-right mobilisation in the capital, making it more important than ever for members to act with unity, awareness and care.
PCS is supporting the national demonstration, which will bring together trade unions, campaigners and community organisations to call for justice, accountability and an end to the violence in Gaza.
Members are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance, allowing for delays and large crowds, and to arrange to meet up with PCS colleagues or groups where possible. Being prepared will help ensure everyone can participate confidently and safely.
Assemble at Exhibition Road, London SW7 2DB at noon. The trade union bloc will assemble on the corner of Prince Consort Road near Exhibition Road.
The demonstration is expected to be large, with a stewarded route through central London. Participants should anticipate busy areas and slower movement at key points, with clear signage and stewards on hand to guide the march throughout.
At the end of the demonstration, dispersal will take place gradually to avoid overcrowding. Members are advised to leave in groups where possible and to plan their onward journeys in advance, including alternative routes if transport hubs are busy. Taking time to leave safely is an important part of the day.
PCS has produced dedicated safety guidance for members attending the demonstration and for those working on the day. All members are strongly encouraged to review the PCS ARAF strategy and the PCS demonstration safety card, which provide key information on rights and practical advice for staying safe.
Nakba 78 is a moment to stand together for human rights, dignity and justice. By preparing properly and following union guidance, PCS members can ensure their participation is both safe and impactful. Members are encouraged to support one another, act in the spirit of solidarity and respect, and demonstrate the strength and values of the trade union movement.
