MPs show support for parliamentary security strikers

Ahead of the second 24-hour walkout next week by PCS members who work as security staff at the Houses of Parliament, MPs have been calling on the government to act to resolve the dispute while sending solidarity messages to our strikers.

PCS members are in dispute over changes to their terms and conditions and pay, including the loss of six days' annual leave and a worsening ethnicity pay gap. They held a well-supported one-day strike on Wednesday and are following that up with another 24-hour walkout from 7am next Wednesday (10).

Dozens of MPs joined our members on picket lines outside parliament and have sent messages of support to the strikers.

MP Apsana Begum sent a plea from the picket line to resolve the dispute to the Parliamentary Security Department, which is responsible for security across the Houses of Parliament. She has written to the clerk of the House, Tom Goldsmith, urging an amicable, fair and swift resolution to the dispute.

“We know as parliamentarians how hard the staff work to keep us and our staff safe on the parliamentary estate,” she said. “It’s really important that everyone involved in this dispute comes round the negotiating table and make sure that they work really hard to find a resolution to this dispute because these workers are very dedicated and work extremely hard.”

Fellow MP Paula Barker said that the “workers having their pay and annual leave cut is simply unacceptable.”

“They go above and beyond every single day and do an amazing job. Let’s be sensible and show these workers how much they are appreciated.”

MP Kim Johnson said she was “Honoured to stand with PCS members from the Parliamentary Security Department striking against attacks on their terms and conditions of employment.”

MP Ian Lavery praised our members who “do a superb job protecting the parliamentary estate.”
