Stand with Birmingham Bin Workers - Rally and March 20 September

PCS is calling on all members and supporters to stand shoulder to shoulder with Birmingham’s striking refuse workers this Saturday at a major rally and march in the city.

The day will begin at 9.30am at the Unite office, Jennens Road, Birmingham. From there, we will march together through the city to Victoria Square, where a closing rally will be held finishing around 3pm. We want to see the biggest possible show of solidarity for the workers who have been forced into this fight to defend jobs, pay and conditions.

Why they are striking

Birmingham’s bin workers have been taking strike action against the council’s attempts to impose detrimental changes to their contracts. Management’s plans would mean cuts to pay and an attack on hard-won terms and conditions. These workers have been at the sharp end of austerity, yet continue to provide one of the most vital public services in our communities. Their fight is not just about refuse collection in Birmingham, it is about defending all workers against the race to the bottom.

We are urging PCS members across the country to join us on the day. Your presence will send a powerful message that these workers are not alone.

This rally and march is about defending dignity at work and showing that we will not allow employers to pick off workers one group at a time. The courage of Birmingham’s bin workers deserves the backing of our entire movement.
