From Picket Lines to Parliament: Why Political Education Matters

In PCS, we don’t just fight workplace battles, we challenge the systems that cause them. From pay restraint to privatisation, many of the issues our members face day to day are the direct result of political decisions. That’s why political education isn’t an optional extra; it’s essential to our organising.

PCS Midlands has a proud tradition of combining industrial strength with political awareness. Whether we’re on the picket line with striking workers or in the community challenging cuts, we know that understanding the bigger picture makes our campaigns stronger and more strategic.

Political education isn’t about telling members who to vote for. It’s about equipping ourselves with the knowledge and confidence to ask the right questions, hold decision-makers to account, and fight for a fairer system, not just a fairer workplace.

That’s why PCS continues to run workshops, training and political schools, and why we encourage reps and activists to get involved in everything from local campaigning to lobbying MPs. If we want to shift the balance of power, we have to understand where the power lies and how to organise to change it.

Now more than ever, with a new government in place and a cost-of-living crisis still biting, we need to build a union that’s sharp on strategy and rooted in working-class politics. Political education isn’t a luxury; it’s a tool for survival.
