Day two at the DSG conference: Driving Action Through Debate

Day two of the Defence Sector Group Conference delivered a packed agenda of motions and debate, reflecting the commitment and determination of our members across the UK.

On organising, the GEC brought forward a motion to review our branch structures in light of the ongoing Defence Reform programme. With major restructuring underway, it's essential that the interests of the members are safeguarded. The motion ensures our activists are central to this review, fully engaged and consulted throughout. DSg Scotland also brought an important motion to the floor, advocating for Military Guard Service members and calling for clearer recognition of the unique challenges they face around shift working.

Outsourcing generated strong feeling across the floor. Despite the promises of several prominent voices within Labour that a Starmer government would deliver “the biggest wave of insourcing in a generation,” delegates noted the lack of tangible progress. In response, Conference backed a motion calling for a moratorium on any new outsourcing within the MoD and a firm commitment to preserve existing in-house services. DSg South West further strengthened this with a motion urging PCS to oppose outsourcing in the MoD and its arms-length bodies, including Defence Equipment and Support and the Submarine Delivery Agency, and to actively pursue insourcing wherever possible.

Conference also passed motions on disability passports, reasonable adjustments, and tackling bullying, harassment, discrimination and victimisation; core issues that require ongoing pressure and action from both the PCS and the employer.

DSg Yorkshire raised important points around health and safety, particularly around excessive heat in the workplace and the need for proper risk assessments to safeguard staff wellbeing.

The day closed on a high note with a presentation to our retired former GEC member, Steve Robinson, who was awarded a Distinguished Life Membership by the Group President - a well-earned recognition of his service and dedication.

The motions agreed will now go forward to the newly elected Defence GEC when it meets in the coming weeks.
