International Workers’ Day – May Day
1 May is a day to come together and celebrate workers’ unity and strength.
This May Day also marks the anniversary of the 1926 General Strike, 100 years ago, when millions of workers stood together in solidarity for fair pay, safe conditions and trade union rights. The centenary is a powerful reminder of the strength of collective action, and the role unions play in defending working people.
There are trade union events organised across the UK and Ireland, today over the weekend and bank holiday Monday. These events bring workers and their families together to honour that legacy, reflect on the ongoing struggles workers face today, and recommit to building union power for the future.
PCS general secretary Fran Heathcote said: “International Workers’ Day brings working people together to show our collective strength. May Day reminds us that our rights were won through organisation and solidarity, not handed down from above.

Martin Cavanagh, PCS president, said: “On International Workers’ Day 2026 and as we approach the centenary of the 1926 General Strike, we are reminded of the power of collective action. Commemorating that moment speaks to today’s challenges, from attacks on workers’ rights to the rise of the far right. May Day is a chance to renew our commitment to solidarity, democracy and inspiring a new generation to organise for a fairer future.”
