International Workers’ Memorial Day 2026
On 28 April 2026, we mark International Workers’ Memorial Day, dedicated to remembering those killed or injured by unsafe work and renewing the commitment to preventing future tragedies.
Under the enduring motto of "remembering the dead and fighting for the living," trade unions continue to campaign for better protections for all workers. The theme for this year focuses on psychological hazards and mental health risks. 124 people lost their lives at work last year, but while physical dangers are often clear, the impact of stress, anxiety, burnout, bullying, and harassment is frequently overlooked.
These factors lead to serious physical and mental health conditions, often resulting in deaths and injuries that are not officially recorded as work-related. Additionally, the escalating climate crisis is making work increasingly dangerous, as many workers face extreme temperatures and hazardous conditions without adequate safeguards.
Across the United Kingdom, various events are being held to honour those who have died. In Northern Ireland, Irish Congress held a wreath-laying ceremony at Stormont Estate. Similar events are coordinated by the Scottish TUC and by the TUC for those in England and Wales. These gatherings serve as a reminder that issues such as excessive workloads and poor management are fundamental health and safety concerns that require urgent attention.
Action is essential to ensuring safe and dignified work for everyone. PCS offers extensive guidance on protecting mental wellbeing and encourages members to get involved in health and safety workplace activities and campaigns within their branches. One of the most effective ways to drive change is by becoming a health and safety representative, ensuring that protections are upheld on the front line. Together, workers can honour those they have lost by campaigning for a safer future.
