Make women’s voices count: AGM season

PCS's head of equalities, Diane Ebanks, explains how branch annual general meetings (AGMs) are where both union democracy and the fight for equality begin.

More than half of PCS members are women – yet women remain underrepresented in the union’s activist structure. That’s why now, more than ever, your participation matters. As a worker, you may also be a parent, or a carer. Your experiences and perspectives are important to shaping discussions, policy and action within PCS.

Annual general meeting (AGM) season has arrived in PCS, and it's your time to get involved. AGMs are where you can raise concerns about workplace issues, help shape the future direction of the union and hear what your branch representatives have been doing to tackle those workplace issues.

Attending your AGM gives you the opportunity to propose motions on issues that matter most to you and your colleagues. Think there's room for improvement in workplace policies? Want to see more initiatives that support women, disabled workers, or promote equality? This is your chance to bring those ideas forward and start those debates.

Further, becoming an advocate or a rep is a great way to make your voice heard. PCS offers training and support to help you become a confident and capable leader in your union.

So, mark your calendar for your branch’s AGM, participate in the discussions, and maybe even submit a motion that could start that change. Your voice matters. Your voice counts. Let's make sure it's heard loud and clear this AGM season.
