Make your new year’s resolution to get more active in PCS
You can get involved in making real changes in your workplace by building strength and participation in PCS.
With a new year just begun, now is a great time to think about building a stronger voice at work, as part of PCS. As an organising union, PCS is an example of workplace solidarity where members can make local and national change happen.
Here are the top three ways you can get involved.
- Step into a union role
In PCS every member has a democratic voice but if you’re interested in taking on some responsibility and helping members where you work, there are various roles that you could take on.
You don’t have to become a rep. As a first step you could become a PCS advocate - a union member who is willing to speak to colleagues about PCS, ask non-members to join and do small tasks to raise the visibility of the union. Advocates don’t need to take on personal cases or take part in negotiations with management.
You could join one of our equality networks. Our five national equality forums are devoted to working for women, black, disabled, young, and LGBT+ members.
If you want to become a workplace rep, full training is provided and there are a range of different positions. Just speak to your local rep for more information.
- Gain more skills
All those involved in PCS whether as reps or advocates have a role to play in educating members, non-member colleagues, friends, and family about how strong unions can transform the workplace, and wider society, for the better.
With a raft of wide range of courses available to PCS members, you can develop your skills either as a rep or as an ordinary member. Courses range from the introductory “Welcome to PCS” course through to “Strategic Planning” and also include courses on employability, equality, financial wellbeing and IT.
Check out the full range of courses in the PCS Academy prospectus.
- Your branch AGM
All PCS members are entitled to attend their annual general meeting. Normally it will take place in February or March and it is the basic democratic building block of the union. It’s where you can move motions to be debated and adopted at your group conference or at PCS’s national annual delegates conference.
Keep an eye out for updates from your branch about your AGM.
