Neurodiversity Celebration Week
Neurodiversity Celebration Week runs from 16-20 March. It challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about neurodivergent conditions and celebrates the unique contributions neurodiverse people make in our workplaces and communities.
It’s estimated that 1 in 7 people worldwide are neurodivergent. In the UK alone this represents about 13 million people. Too often, neurodivergent people face environments that are designed around a narrow idea of what is considered normal. This can lead to barriers in education, in the workplace and in everyday life. Neurodiversity Celebration Week is a reminder that the problem does not lie with individuals but with systems that fail to accommodate a full range of human variation.
Neurodiversity Celebration Week, which was started in 2018, gives unions an opportunity to highlight these issues, educate members and challenge employers who fall short of their legal and moral responsibilities. It also allows us to amplify the voices of neurodivergent workers themselves, ensuring their lived experience shapes workplace policies, bargaining demands and equality strategies. When unions negotiate for clearer job expectations, quieter workspaces, flexible hours, alternative assessment methods or adjustments to performance management, they are not offering special treatment. They are ensuring that every worker has a fair chance to do their job well.
The week also reminds us of the strengths that neurodivergent workers bring to the trade union movement. Many contribute creativity, intense focus, problem-solving skills and new ways of approaching long-standing challenges. These strengths are too often overlooked or undervalued. Celebrating neurodiversity means recognising that inclusive workplaces are not only fairer but more effective.
Throughout this week we’ll be sharing advice and guidance on neurodiversity as well as amplifying the voices of neurodivergent reps from within PCS.
