PCS backs call to suspend ITF general secretary

In her letter this week, Fran referred to a Novara Media report published last week which revealed extremely concerning allegations of sexual harassment, mismanagement and a toxic culture within the ITF under the current leadership. These include claims of inappropriate behaviour towards female staff, misuse of union funds, and the fostering of a 'sexist boys’ club' environment and the unlawful targeting of trade union representatives at the ITF which connects nearly 700 affiliated trade unions from 150 countries.

“All of these are unconscionable behaviours for a trade union,” said Fran.

The RMT has called for Mr Cotton’s suspension pending a full investigation, and Fran is urging the same.

Internal survey shows alarming experiences

These revelations are made even more concerning by the ITF’s own internal survey, which found that nearly 40% of women felt unsafe at ITF events, and half had experienced or witnessed sexual harassment. These allegations are incompatible with the principles of the trade union movement, and immediate action is required to ensure transparency, equality and accountability, said Fran.

The letter called for the ITF to:

1) Immediately suspend Mr. Cotton from his role

2) Commission and fully co-operate with an independent investigation into all allegations

3) To engage fully with the recognised staff union to work throughout this process

4) Commit the ITF to implement structural reforms following the outcome of any investigation to ensure that it remains aligned with principles of the trade union movement.

Fran concluded by emphasising that the ITF “must move forward, fostering an environment that reflects the values of equality, safety, and solidarity.”
