PCS General Secretary comments on the Prime Minister's resignation
Sir Keir Starmer announced yesterday (22) that he would leave office.
PCS welcomes the gains made by our members under this Labour government – from improved pay settlements, the Employment Rights Act and the announced insourcing of 2,000 workers just last week.
But too often Keir Starmer’s government had the wrong instincts and had to be dragged into a better position.
Starmer’s government targeted ordinary working class people – from pensioners’ winter fuel allowance and cuts to disability benefits to his disgraceful "island of strangers" speech and immigration reforms which put migrant workers at risk.
His defence of Israel’s genocidal campaign in Gaza and failure to put strong sanctions on Israel has put a stain on the UK’s reputation, alongside cuts to international aid and diplomacy.
Keir Starmer will be remembered as a leader lacking in conviction, quick to turn his back on the most vulnerable, and complicit in one of the greatest crimes of our age.
Commenting on his departure, PCS General Secretary Fran Heathcote said: “PCS is an independent union and our sole loyalty is to our members. We have had increased engagement from ministers and worked closely to make some gains for workers, but we will not hesitate to call out attacks on our members or their interests.
