PCS pressure forces U-turn as Met agrees to retain PCSOs
The Metropolitan Police has agreed to retain and redeploy Police Community Support Officers who had faced losing their roles.
PCS has secured a major victory for its members after the Metropolitan Police agreed to retain and redeploy Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) who had faced losing their roles following changes to red route enforcement.
The decision follows sustained campaigning and intervention from PCS, which had warned that hundreds of experienced staff were at risk of being forced out of policing altogether.
Under the new arrangements, PCSOs will remain within the Met and will be redeployed into vacant roles and priority areas across London, where community support is most needed.
The issue was escalated to the highest levels of City Hall, with the Mayor of London making clear he expected a solution that would see PCSOs retained. The decision marks a significant reversal of the previous plans, which would have seen these workers pushed out of public service.
PCS general secretary Fran Heathcote said: “This is a massive win for our dedicated members.
“Met staff were facing losing their livelihoods through no fault of their own. PCS stood firm, raised this at every level, and worked with partners across London to force action.
“As a result of that pressure, the Met has now done the right thing and agreed to keep these dedicated PCSOs within policing, where their skills and experience are desperately needed.
“This outcome shows exactly why trade unions matter. When we organise, campaign, and apply pressure, we can protect jobs and defend public service."
