PCS Scotland Executive Committee stands firm against far-right division

The committee has issued a statement following the mobilisation of far-right supporters in Scottish towns and cities.

PCS Scotland executive committee condemns the repugnant scenes witnessed in Glasgow city centre and in other Scottish towns and cities where far-right elements mobilised to spread fear, racism and violence on our streets.

There can be no justification for intimidation, assaults on members of the public, or attempts to divide our communities. These actions are not about “protecting" anyone - they are about sowing hatred and targeting migrants, refugees and minority communities.

We are particularly concerned by the targeting of spaces and narratives connected to tragedy and grief in an attempt to inflame tensions. This is a cynical and dangerous tactic, and one that must be called out wherever it arises.

PCS Scotland stands with all those in our communities, of every background, faith and none, who reject these attempts to sow division. Our movement is rooted in solidarity, equality and collective action. The growth of the right is organised and well-resourced, and it poses a real threat not only to minority communities, but to trade union members and to women’s rights.

We will continue to work with the wider trade union movement, anti-racist organisations and campaigns such as Stand Up To Racism and Women Against the Far Right Scotland to build a united response. We encourage PCS branches and members to get involved in local organising, support mobilisations, and help ensure that such attempts to divide people are opposed wherever they are organised.

In Scotland we have a proud history of coming together and resisting racism. PCS Scotland is committed to continuing that tradition - standing firm against division, and for a society based on justice, dignity and solidarity for all.
