PCS statement following latest attack on place of worship

This weekend a terrifying act of violence was targeted at a mosque in Peacehaven, with the front door of the place of worship and a car parked in front of it set alight. Luckily two people inside the mosque escaped without physical injuries.

This follows on from PCS members of the Muslim faith, reporting to us only last week, that they were feeling increasingly concerned about their safety. One member withdrew their application to attend a PCS seminar due to fears of travelling alone on public transport, and another member had to be supported from the office, after their workplace was targeted by “Unite the Kingdom” supporters putting up flags and playing loud music outside.

PCS sends our solidarity and support to all members of Muslim faith, in light of these recent incidents, and reminds all of our members of the availability of the racial incident helpline on 020 7801 2678.

Our union has long campaigned for peace and harmony within our society and will continue to do so. We will also shortly be reviewing our Against Racism Against Fascism (ARAF) strategy. The strategy seeks to provide the tools and guidance for reps and members to safely challenge inappropriate behaviour, racism, and bigotry within workplaces and our communities.
