PCS Statement on N Ireland Violence

PCS utterly condemns the violence and disorder that has taken place across N Ireland over the past 24 hours. We appeal for calm and restraint at what is already a deeply tense and distressing time for many communities.

Firstly, our thoughts remain with the victim of Monday night’s brutal and horrific attack. Such acts of violence are reprehensible, and our sympathies are with those affected. However, the scenes witnessed since then do nothing to serve justice or support the victim. Instead, they risk causing further harm and division.

We are deeply concerned that this attack has been cynically exploited as a flag of convenience by elements of the far right to inflame tensions and mobilise unrest. The actions we have seen bear all the hallmarks of organised attempts to intimidate, divide, and scapegoat. This must be called out for what it is.

PCS stands firmly against racism and fascism in all its forms. We are proud of our long-standing anti-racist and anti-fascist work, and we will continue to challenge those who seek to spread hatred and division within our society.

PCS General Secretary, Fran Heathcote said “We commend the emergency services who have responded with professionalism and courage to violent incidents. Their efforts to keep people safe in extremely challenging circumstances deserve recognition and support.

“We also want to make it clear that PCS stands ready to assist any of our members who may be affected by these events, whether directly or indirectly. No member should feel isolated or unsupported at a time like this.

“We would particularly appeal to young people who may find themselves caught up in these events. Do not allow yourselves to be manipulated or drawn in by those who do not have your best interests at heart. Violence and disorder will not improve anyone’s situation and can have serious, lasting consequences.

This kind of violence has no place in any society. We urge everyone to step back, remain calm, and allow the criminal justice system to carry out its role.”
