Perverse to be ploughing ahead with welfare cuts

“It is perverse for the work and pensions secretary to be ploughing ahead with cuts to disability benefits,” PCS General Secretary Fran Heathcote has said as Liz Kendall is expected today to double down on Labour’s £5 billion disability benefits cuts

Fran said: “In the midst of a worsening cost-of-living crisis, with unemployment rising and poverty increasing, it is perverse for the work and pensions secretary to be ploughing ahead with cuts to disability benefits.

“The DWP’s own data shows 700,000 people would be sent deeper into poverty by these cuts as well as another 250,000 tipped into poverty.

“If this government needs more money in the Exchequer, it should be looking in bank accounts and property portfolios of the rich, not picking the pockets of the poorest.”
